Description of the Science Content of the Module: :Impact teaches properties and characteristics of comets, asteroids, meteors, meteoroids, and meteorites. It also introduces tools used to observe space such as telescopes, spectrometers, satellites, and probes.
When it is most appropriate to use the Module: During the teaching of meteors, meteoroids, meteorites, comets, and asteroids. Also can be used as an introduction to space tools.
Game Play: Players will operate a cannon used to defend Earth from comets, asteroids, meteors, meteoroids, and meteorites. Unique types of ammunition are provided to shoot down the different objects striking Earth. If all seven continents on the Earth are damaged from Impact the game is over. In order to learn more about and weaken the objects striking Earth the player can use space tools. These space tools include a telescope to increase the line of sight of the cannon, a spectrometer to analyze and weaken the objects, scientists to recover health, communication satellites that act as bombs to destroy all objects on the screen, and probes to gather information on all objects in the sky. For each object the is successfully destroyed the player earns knowledge points. These knowledge points can later be used in the astronomy lab to upgrade the space tools, making them more powerful. Additional knowledge points can be earned by correctly answering bonus questions presented at the conclusion of each level.
