Overview
Funded by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Russ College of Engineering graduate students YingZhong, Yanhui Fang, En Ye and Jourdan Siemer developed the Chemical Exposure Awareness Game.
The development team demonstrated the game at the 4th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington, D.C. from April 20-22, 2008 in competition for the EPA’s People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Award.
The purpose of the P3 Awards program is the achievement of economic prosperity, the protection of the natural systems of Earth and a higher quality of life for its people. The P3 competition provides grants to teams of college students to research, develop and design solutions to increase sustainability beyond simple pollution prevention.
The development team, which operates out of the Virtual Immersive Technologies and Arts for Learning (VITAL) Lab at Ohio University, works under the guidance of Dr. Tiao Chang, Professor of Civil Engineering, and Dr. Chang Liu, AssistantProfessor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
The purpose of the Chemical Exposure Awareness Game is to increase awareness of the everyday exposure to chemicals that the public faces by placing players in virtual contact with various chemicals. The game’s structure is modeled after the classic board game Monopoly and is located in the virtual world of Second Life.
Demonstrating the positive and negative effects of chemicals, the game provides information about the reduction of chemical exposure and encourages players to consider sustainable lifestyles, such as eco-friendly housing and healthful food consumption.
