Article covering the event (by Jill Mapes)
On Thursday, January 29, 2009, Credit Union innovators from around the nation gathered to discuss the upcoming public opening of a new technological advancement that is anticipated to change the way young adults learn about financial literacy. The meeting of minds, however, reflected as the technological advancement itself by being digital – the attendees’ avatars met in the online virtual world of Second Life instead of a drafty conference room.
The gathering was to celebrate the internal ribbon-cutting of The Credit Union Island, a financial literacy game conceived by the Filene Research Institute and created by the VITAL Lab at Ohio University. The game’s main goal is to teach young people financial skills through virtual gameplay that mimics real-life decisions. While the ribbon cutting held on January 29, 2009 was to premiere Credit Union Island to those involved in the game’s planning and production, the Credit Union Island on Second Life will publicly open January 11, 2009.
First to speak at the ribbon cutting was Scott Moriarty, a member of Filene's i3 Innovation project and the driving force behind Credit Union Island. Moriarty introduced the island’s concept to newcomers through a series of videos created by the VITAL Lab. He later turned over the virtual microphone to Denise Gabel, a Chief Innovation Officer at the Filene Research Institute.
VITAL Lab Director Dr. Chang Liu addressed the digital crowd third, highlighting the hard work that went into the production of Credit Union Island from not only the Russ College of Engineering but other academic disciplines at Ohio University. The most notable input was made by Roger Shelor, professor of finance within OU’s School of Business, who spoke at the opening event following Dr. Liu.
VITAL Lab Advisor Dr. Teresa Franklin, a professor in instructional technology within OU’s College of Education, spoke during the opening event as well. Franklin stressed the importance of following national standards of finance education by working with high school teachers as the game is integrated into classrooms. “Digital natives,” Franklin’s term for students who’ve grown up with using computers, will likely respond well to Credit Union Island because it is both social and interactive.
Ribbon-cutting attendees toured the island’s car dealership, beach and housing area after the event’s speakers completed their remarks. Moriarty closed the event by noting that the future phases of the Credit Union Island, one of which he expects to be completed by the end of Winter Quarter, will be more customizable and complex. Advanced versions of the Credit Union Island depend on further funding, Moriarty said.
The Credit Union Island will be presented to 100 Athens High School students later this month. The game will also be presented within Wisconsin, New York and Maryland schools in upcoming months.
