Ohio STEAM sim

The "Ohio STEAM" sim on the Teen Grid of Second Life is used for several projects in the VITAL Lab at Ohio University, including the NSF GK-12 STEAM project and the Ohio EPA OEEF WWL Ohio project.

We ask all students and visitors of the Ohio STEAM island to follow the Ohio University Teen Grid Community Standards in addition to the applicable ones suggested by Linden Lab (http://teen.secondlife.com/footer/cs). 5956584280110105836953

[edit] Sim partition

To ensure safe and productive activities on the Ohio STEAM sim for all high schools and middle schools involved, we have decided to partition the Ohio STEAM sim (aka island, region, or estate) into four parcels, as shown in Figure 1.

1. Athens High School will use the 1/4 sim on the Southwest corner (i.e. the bottom-left parcel on Figure 1).
2. Meigs High School will use the 1/4 sim on the Northwest corner (the top-left parcel on Figure 1).
3. All middle school students will use the parcel on the Southeast corner (i.e. the bottom-right parcel wrapped by red tapes on Figure 1).
4. The fourth parcel is a buffer zone between the high school parcels and the middle school parcel, as shown in the middle of Figure 1. This parcel is assigned to the STEAM project and will be used to help accommodate the large Stocker building.

[edit] Find out where you are

To learn where you are on the island, check the land information to the right of the menu bar. If it says "Ohio STEAM 147,110,35 (PG) - The STEAM project", then you are on the buffer parcel that's assigned to the STEAM project.

Another useful thing to do is to enable the "View/Property Lines" option.

[edit] Access control

Access for each parcel can be controlled separately. Unfortunately, Second Life does not provide a mechanism to allow multiple groups to access a parcel and keep others out. If other words, allowed individuals need to added to the "About Land.../Access" tab one by one. Only middle school students, teachers, and STEAM Graduate Fellows are allowed to visit the middle school parcel.

[edit] Edit terrain

Edit terrain can be controlled on two levels, the region level and the parcel level. We enable "Edit Terrain" on the region level and will enable or disable this option in different parcels according to project needs.
